Stainton Grove Household Waste Recycling Centre (HWRC) operates every day.

Opening hours

We are currently operating on Winter opening hours (October to March):

Note: all recycling centres are closed on Christmas Day and New Year's Day, other Bank Holidays operate using weekend opening hours.

Before you set off - what you need to know

  • Give enough time to unload your waste before closing time of the site, otherwise you may be refused entry.
  • If you've got a large load we advise you to get there at least 30 minutes before closing.
  • Sorting your waste into material types before visiting the recycling centre may save you time at the site.

Please note site staff will open bags to sort the waste.

What you can dispose of at a recycling centre

Recycling centres are for household waste only. Staff on site may ask you about the type and quantity of waste you are disposing of, if they believe it may be business or landlord waste.

The following items can be recycled at this site:

  • soil and rubble
  • wood and plasterboard (no wood treated with hazardous materials such as railway sleepers and no painted commercial heavy-duty pallets )
  • garden waste
  • scrap metal
  • gas bottles
  • waste oil and car batteries
  • tyres (maximum of five tyres)
  • household batteries
  • TV's and monitors
  • fridges and electrical appliances
  • fluorescent light tubes
  • paper and cardboard (only wrapping paper and card without foil and glitter can be recycled)
  • cans and glass
  • plastics and cartons
  • textiles and shoes
  • cooking oil
  • general waste and carpets (accepted on site, but not separated for recycling)
  • vapes and ecigarette canisters
  • coffee pods (separate plastic and aluminium and drop loose into correct container)
  • medical equipment (community return location for prescribed Medequip labelled equipment that is no longer needed - drop off in the blue amnesty bin)

Business and landlord waste

Stainton Grove Household Waste Recycling Centre (tip) is the only recycling centre in County Durham where you can legally get rid of your trade waste. Find out more about how you can dispose of your waste on our Commercial or trade waste collection and Waste from landlords pages and view our trade waste prices in the table below. Those using the site to get rid of trade waste must wear appropriate protection clothing: hard hat, hi viz and safety footwear.

All charges include 20% VAT.

  • Domestic fridges and freezers: £30
  • Commercial fridge (small / medium / large): £55 / £80 / £130
  • Scrap metal: £15

If you are accessing the weighbridge, you will need a Waste Carriers Licence and if your load has electrical items you will also need a Hazardous Waste Consignment Note. See Gov.uk: hazardous waste consignment note. When you arrive at the weighbridge, please sound your horn and remain in your vehicle until we can help you. 

Reuse shop at Stainton Grove

Items which are still in good condition with plenty of life left in them can be bought at the shop, which is run by H W Martin Waste Limited. Stock varies daily depending on what is dropped off at the recycling centre. Donations are welcome.

Medical equipment

Stainton Grove HWRC is one of three across County Durham offering an amnesty bin for unwanted medical equipment. Walking frames, crutches, bathing aids or any other items, loaned from the NHS and no longer needed, can be dropped off. The items will be thoroughly cleansed and mended where necessary before going back to the NHS for those in need.
