Ebchester Conservation Area

Ebchester is situated approximately 12 miles west-south-west of Newcastle-upon-Tyne, 14 miles north-west of the City of Durham and 2½ miles north of Consett in County Durham, on the banks of the River Derwent, which forms the boundary between County Durham and Northumberland.

The conservation area at Ebchester covers a large part of the historic core of the settlement, which was originally the site of Vindomora Roman Fort. Despite much of the Roman heritage being buried under present day buildings and streets, the village still possesses features that reflect its historical importance and character.

The Conservation Area was designated in 1975 and reviewed in 2009.

Ebchester Conservation Area Appraisal

To ensure County Durham's conservation areas are properly managed, we produce Conservation Area Character Appraisal documents that will help raise awareness of their special character and interest. The Ebchester Conservation Area Character Appraisal was formally adopted by our Cabinet on 16 December 2009 and recommends ways to improve and to manage change as well as providing an interesting history and snapshot of the area.
