Mental Capacity Act training

Delivered in partnership with Durham Safeguarding Adults Partnership.

This course aims to provide you with knowledge on how the Act can support safeguarding adults.

Who the course is for?

This course is ideal for anyone who works in Health and Social Care. 

Particularly staff or volunteers who either work or come into contact with adults at risk of abuse and neglect who are unable to make some decisions for themselves. 

Learning method

The course is delivered virtually via Microsoft Teams. 

It is one session over approximately 3 hours. 

What you will learn

By completing this course, you will understand: 

  • The Mental Capacity Act values and principles
  • The Mental Capacity Act and Code of Practice to practice
  • Nature of consent
  • How to carry out a capacity assessment
  • Roles of advocates, attorneys, the Office of the Public Guardian, and the Court of Protection 
  • Importance of accurate, evidence based recording and apply this to practice 
  • How to apply knowledge to Best interests decision making
  • Process of the Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards (DoLS)
  • Be able to apply The Mental Capacity Act to the safeguarding adults context
