Courses to support your relationships

Conflict is a normal part of any relationship. It only starts to become a problem when it is frequent, intense and not resolved well. The latest research tells us that conflict is harmful to children and affects their mental health, behaviour and success at school. These courses can help you improve your relationship and get on better.

Me, You and Baby too - for new parents and parents-to-be

The course includes a mixture of video clips, animations, pictures and activities. You can do it all in one go or you can take a break between sections and come back when you're ready to carry on.

Having a baby is one of the biggest changes you and your partner can go through. You'll both be tired and stressed, and you may argue more. Me, You and Baby Too is designed to help you find your way through these changes so you can sort out any disagreements and keeping moving forward together.  This will be better for you, better for your partner, and better for your baby.

The course is split into three sections:

  • Changes for me and us - Having a baby is an exciting time but it can also be very challenging. This section helps you to understand how your relationship with each other will change and why it matters to your baby.
  • Coping with stress - Having a baby can be stressful and overwhelming. This section helps you to identify causes of stress and learn ways of coping together and supporting each other.
  • Conflict and communication - Arguments can be constructive (helpful) or destructive (harmful). This section helps you to think about how the arguments start, and how they get out of hand. Most importantly, it will give you the skills to resolve arguments in a more constructive way.

If you feel you need extra support, please visit one of our Family Hubs or speak with your midwife or health visitor - Find your nearest Family Hub.

Arguing better - for parents who are together

The course includes a mixture of video clips, animations, pictures and activities. You can do it all in one go or you can take a break between sections and come back when you're ready to carry on.

It is all about finding helpful ways to communicate during stressful times. You'll learn why arguments happen, how they can affect you, and the best ways to support each other.

It may be particularly useful for anyone who is dealing with a lot of stress or arguing more than they'd like to.

The course is split into three sections:

  • Understanding stress - This section helps you to understand how stress affects you and your relationship.  It helps you to identify causes of stress.
  • Coping with stress together - This section helps you to learn ways of coping with stress together and supporting each other.
  • Arguing better - Arguments can be constructive (helpful) or destructive (harmful). This section helps you to think about how the arguments start, and how they get out of hand. Most importantly, it will give you the skills to resolve arguments in more constructive ways.

Getting it Right for Children - for separating or separated parents

When parents separate, it's hard for everyone. It's a stressful time and, with emotions running high, even everyday arrangements can become a source of arguments.

The goal of this course is to minimise the effects that your separation has on your children. It is designed to help separating parents communicate better for the sake of their children. You can do it all in one go but it's often best to spread it over a few weeks to give yourself time to reflect and practise the skills.

As you go through, you'll see a series of video clips showing different scenarios where children are put in the middle of their parents' disagreements. You'll get to see what it's like for the parents and the children involved, and you'll learn new skills that can help you resolve disagreements in a better way.

By the end of the course, you will be able to:

  • stay calm and listen as well as talk
  • see things from a different point of view
  • stop a discussion from turning in to an argument
  • negotiate to make compromises
  • work out solutions

If you feel you need extra support and are already working with a professional or are in contact with your GP or child's school, they will be able to support you in getting the help you need. Alternatively, you can visit one of our Family Hubs (Find your nearest Family Hub) or telephone First Contact 03000 267 979 and ask to speak to an Early Help Triage Worker.
