Our approach to health and wellbeing

Wellbeing is hugely important to us. We are proud of the strong and comprehensive wellbeing support we provide to our staff.

Wellbeing is defined as feeling good and functioning well physically, mentally, and socially. We all experience a sense of wellbeing differently and as an employer, we want to support every member of staff to feel and function at their best.

Our health and wellbeing offer to staff

Compassionate leave

We understand that life can present challenging moments, and to support you during such times, we can offer up to 5 working days of compassionate leave. This leave can be used in various difficult situations, including the serious illness of a loved one, bereavement, or major emergencies at home.

Discounted gym membership

Stay active and support your physical health with discounted membership at participating local gyms and leisure centres, available exclusively to our staff.

Employee Assistance Programme (EAP)

Our EAP is a free, 24/7 confidential service offering expert advice and counselling on a wide range of personal and professional issues including stress, anxiety, relationships, money, and legal matters.

Employer Supported Volunteering (ESV) scheme

We encourage giving back to the community. Our ESV scheme allows staff to take paid time off to volunteer for causes close to their hearts, supporting personal development and civic pride.

Eye tests for screen users

If you regularly use display screen equipment (VDUs) as part of your role, you may be entitled to a free eye test and contribution toward corrective lenses if required for work.

Family friendly and carer support policies

We are committed to helping you manage the demands of both your personal and professional life. Our supportive policies often exceed basic legal requirements and include:

  • enhanced maternity leave and pay
  • paternity leave
  • shared parental leave
  • adoption leave
  • neonatal care leave

Additionally, if you are an approved foster carer or a shared lives carer for our council, you may request paid time off to assist with fulfilling the responsibilities of your caring role. Find out more about our Fostering Friendly Status.

Health and wellbeing champions

Our network of champions are staff who are passionate about promoting a healthy workplace culture. They act as local advocates for wellbeing, help raise awareness of support available and encourage positive changes within teams.

Mental Health First Aiders

Trained Mental Health First Aiders are available across the council to offer a listening ear, provide initial support, and signpost colleagues to appropriate services when they're struggling with their mental health.

Networks and support groups

Our staff networks allow you to connect with others, share experiences, and build a supportive community, such as LGBTQ+, disability, carers, and menopause support.

Occupational Health Service

Our in-house team provides confidential support to help you stay healthy and manage any work-related or personal health challenges. This includes health assessments, advice on adjustments, and tailored recommendations to support your wellbeing.

Occupational sick pay

If you're unwell, we offer generous occupational sick pay provisions to give you peace of mind while you recover, reducing the stress of lost income during periods of illness.

Wellbeing portal

Our wellbeing portal is your go-to resource for self-care and support. Access practical tools, information, advice, and signposts to local and national services covering topics like stress management, healthy eating, exercise, and financial planning.

Other rewards and benefits

Our Rewards and benefits if you work for us page will tell you all the things we offer that are designed to help you perform at your best, including flexible working, hybrid working (home and office working), the Vivup Employee Benefits Portal and Lifestyle Savings Scheme, Local Government Pension Scheme (LGPS) membership and trade union membership.

Rewards and benefits are subject to individual terms and conditions.
