Funding boost for road maintenance in County Durham
We are expanding our road resurfacing programme this year after receiving an additional £3.72 million from the Government.
We were allocated an extra £3.77 million for the 2023/24 and 2024/25 financial years and will use the money to expand our capital resurfacing programme. The additional schemes will focus on improving the structural integrity and resilience of the road network.
Cllr John Shuttleworth, our Cabinet member for rural communities and highways, said: "County Durham's network of roads, cycleways and footpaths plays a vital role in the day-to-day lives of all of our residents and businesses, helping to keep people connected and ensuring we all have the essential supplies we need.
"At Durham County Council, we are responsible for maintaining almost 4,000km of carriageway, from busy A roads to small rural lanes.
"We welcome this additional funding, which will allow us to carry out more schemes over the coming year as part of our commitment to keeping County Durham moving."
A list of some of the extra schemes that will be carried out in 2025 can be found on the Additional funding from government for local roads maintenance page.
