Enjoy a great night in Durham

If you're coming into Durham City for a night out, find out how you can enjoy your evening safely.

When you come to Durham City, you'll have a choice of pubs, bars and nightclubs that follow best practice - you can come for a night out in Durham City knowing that:

  • Pubs, bars and nightclubs in the scheme provide better customer safety, both through the standards they work to, and their partnership working with the police and ourselves.
  • You can easily identify these venues, due to the Best Bar None signs they display.
  • There are reduced alcohol-related crime rates in the city centre, because of our partnership working - between the pubs, the police and our enforcement agencies (for example Trading Standards).

Safer socialising

We've gathered some information on how to enjoy the 'best bars' in Durham, while ensuring your enjoyment doesn't impact on your health or safety.

  • Visit NHS Choices: drinking and alcohol for more information about drinking alcohol, sensible drinking and how to avoid a hangover.
  • A truly good night ends with getting home safely. So, before you leave the house, think about getting home safely - see our Personal security page for more information.
  • If you live in the city centre, and you have to walk home, make sure you only follow lit routes. These are shown in our City Safety Group - Night Lights map (below).
